π¦π§ Whooping cough (also called pertussis π·) is making a serious comeback in the U.S., and doctors are sounding the alarm π⚠️
As of now, there have already been over 8,400 cases reported in 2025 π — that’s twice the number reported at this time last year π.
π· 1- What Is Whooping Cough?
Whooping cough is a highly contagious illness π€ that spreads through the air π¬️ when someone coughs or sneezes.
It starts out like a cold π€§ but turns into a severe, gasping cough with a signature “whoop” sound π£️.
π§Έ It’s especially dangerous for babies and young children πΆπ§.
π‘️ The good news? It’s vaccine-preventable! π✨
π 2- Why Are Cases Going Up? π
During the COVID-19 pandemic π·π¦ , whooping cough cases dropped thanks to masking π· and social distancing π§↔️π§.
But now, with fewer precautions and rising vaccine hesitancy ❌π, the illness is coming back strong.
π Experts are concerned, as vaccination rates in kindergartens are dropping, and vaccine exemptions have reached record highs ππ¨.
π£️ “When we fall below 95% vaccination, we lose herd immunity,” says Dr. Ericka Hayes π¬π©⚕️
πΆ 3- Who’s Most at Risk?
πΌ Infants are the most vulnerable — especially before they receive their first DTaP vaccine doses (protecting against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis) π§¬π
π€° That’s why pregnant women are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated — to help protect their baby from day one ππΆπ
π Sadly, too few mothers are getting vaccinated during pregnancy, doctors say.
π« 4- Where Are the Outbreaks Happening?
Here are some of the hotspots π:
- π§Ύ Pennsylvania – 207 cases so far this year, with spikes in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh & schools
- π Michigan – 516 cases already, mostly among kids aged 5 to 17π― Some schools have vaccination rates as low as 30%, creating pockets of vulnerability ⚠️
✔️ 5- What You Can Do to Stay Safe πͺπ‘️
✅ Check your child’s vaccine schedule πΆπ
✅ If you're pregnant, ask your doctor about the Tdap shot π€°π¬
✅ Adults: get a booster every 10 years π
✅ Spread awareness π and protect your community π
π¬ Vaccination is still our best protection — not just for ourselves, but for our precious little ones πΆπ and vulnerable neighbors π€✨
